BREEDS AND VARIETIES OF CHICKEN

All breeds and varieties of chicken are due to natural and artificial selection.

Commercially, they may be referred to as

  •   Egg type- Those that were bred for egg production
  •   Broilers- Those that have been bred for growth and meat production
  •   Dual purpose- Those bred to lay some eggs and provide some meat.

Breeding of chicken for improved meat and eggs production has been relatively recent.

Chicken breeders were able to select for improved traits such as

  •  Egg production, size, shape, colour and quantity
  • Body weight and rate of growth
  • Feed efficiency, high livability and disease resistant
